It’s nearly March, it’s still very cold, kids are back in school, and most of our bank accounts have now had a chance to recover since Christmas. That means this is a great time to look at last-minute, low-cost getaways for some late winter sunshine, and work on your tan at the same time.

Tenerife
One of the nicest of the Canary Islands, Tenerife has gorgeous beaches with golden and black sand, exciting volcano hiking, and plenty of fun watersports activities available. March is a really pleasant time of year for a Tenerife holiday – it’s not as hot, or as busy, as it is in the summer months, but especially in the south of the island it’s warm and you’ll be enjoying around seven hours of sunshine a day, with a lower chance of rain than February. Plus, it’s easily reached in just a few hours from most European airports!
Dublin
St Patrick’s Day falls on a Saturday this year, so if you want to be right in the very centre of the celebrations, book your flights and accommodation in Dublin now. The 17th March is one of the most significant dates in the Catholic calendar worldwide, and in Dublin it’s always accompanied by wild street parties, parades and performances of traditional dance and music. Go with a group of friends to let the good times roll and the Guiness flow, or take along the whole family to experience the fun.
Iceland
The Northern Lights, otherwise known as the Aurora Borealis, is an awe-inspiring natural spectacle when electrically charged particles from the sun enter the earth’s atmosphere, creating an amazing lightshow in the night sky. The best time to see the Northern Lights in Iceland is between October and March. Although this is an expensive destination to visit, in March you’re well out of the peak season, so flights and accommodation will be a little less expensive.
Dominican Republic
Looking a little further afield, the Dominican Republic is a fab Caribbean destination for March. You’re ahead of the hurricane season, so there’s little to worry about with rain, but plenty of sun to bask in. This is an iconic holiday idea for honeymoons, family trips and other romantic escapes, with its azure waters, golden sands and palm trees lilting in the gentle breeze. March is a fantastic time for some island-hopping fun in Thailand. It’s very hot at this time of year in southeast Asia so you really do want to be beside the coast, and luckily you have plenty of choice. Relax in a blissful spa retreat, book a meditation and yoga session on the beach, or get your drinking boots on for a Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan – it’s no wonder Thailand is such a popular place for a holiday in March!
Las Vegas
Fancy somewhere a little more unusual for your March vacation? The springtime weather in Las Vegas is actually very pleasant compared to later in the year. There are great deals available all year-round in the big casino resorts, and lots of awesome things to do besides gambling. Catch a big-name artist in a show, dine out in world-class restaurants, shop the boutiques, or take advantage of the incredible desert landscape all around you. Hiking, mountain biking and horse riding are all popular Nevada activities in the spring, as are trips to explore the iconic Hoover Dam.
