Panstwowe Muzeum Auschwitz-BirkenauAuschwitz former concentration camp known all over the world as symbol of the Holocaust. During second World War Auschiwitz-Birkenau was the largest concentration camp of Nazi Germany. It was established in the suburbs of the city of Oswiecim (Auschwitz in German), 60 kilometres west of Krakow. It took lives out about 1.1 million people, mostly Jewish, but also Poles, Romani, Russian. Liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp took place in January 1945. Before that however, Nazi authorities tried to destroy as much evidence of massive murders as possible. After the war, Polish government decided to restore Auschwitz-Birkenau and turn it into a museum. It preserves the memory of Auschwitz-Birkenau and honours victims of Nazism. Now it is part of the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites and more than a million tourists visit Auschwitz each year.
