Stompe Toren SpaarnwoudeThe Stompe Toren (literally “Blunt Tower”) is one of the oldest monuments in North Holland, located in the village of Spaarnwoude. Built in the 13th century from large medieval bricks called kloostermoppen, the tower originally had a pointed spire. However, in 1844, the spire was removed due to the risk of collapse and lack of funds, leaving the tower with its current flat top — hence the name Stompe (blunt). It was once part of the Sint-Gertrudiskerk, a church largely destroyed in 1573 during the Siege of Haarlem. Only the tower and parts of the walls survived. In 1764, a new smaller church was built against the original tower. The walls of the tower are approximately 1.80 meters thick and were constructed on peatland — a technical feat at the time.
