A Famosa FortThe Portuguese colonised Melaka from 1511 to 1641. The first thing they did was build a fort overlooking the river, calling it A'Famosa. However, Dutch came and destroyed the entire fortress, leaving only the entrance facade named Porta de Santiago which you may still get to see.

Built on the site of the last Melaka sultan’s palace, it was constructed by Portuguese fidalgo (nobleman) captain, Duarte Coelho, in gratitude to the Virgin Mary for saving his life during a storm at sea.
