Historical tour of Lohagarh Fort and Bedse Cave from Pune
Overview
Treat yourself to a memorable historical trip in the lap of nature today. Your first destination is the famous Lohagad Fort, or rather the Iron Fort. Loha is the Hindi word for iron. Perched atop a hill at a height of roughly 3,400 feet, the fort commands sweeping views. Different mighty dynasties occupied the Lohagad at different times, including the legendary Shivaji Maharaj and later on, the Mughals. The fort is full of interesting structures, and also has a huge tank as well as stepwell. The southern side of the fort has some interesting caves. In fact, in recent years the fort shot to fame due to one of the caves. A group of trekkers discovered an inscription in Brahmi script in Prakrit language here. This inscription dates back to the 2nd or 1st century BC and was found in a rock-cut cave on a cliff towards the east of Lohagad Fort. Before the tour culminates, also visit the ancient site of Bedse Caves. These are a group of Buddhist rock-cut monuments. There are two main caves here, and most famous one is Cave 7 or chaitya (prayer hall). A large impressive stupa is situated here. You may also visit the other main cave – this Cave 11, is more like a monastery.
