Lews CastleRedeveloped in 2015 to bring the building back to its original state, Lews Castle was built between 1840 and 1860 by Lord and Lady Matheson, as a luxurious dwelling. Sold onto Lord Leverhulme of Unilever, the Castle, grounds, Stornoway and surrounding areas was left to the people of Stornoway in 1924, culminating in the first land owning trust in Scotland being established. The building had a museum added in the redevelopment which houses a rich history of the islands and some of the Lewis Chessmen which were discovered in a sand dune in Uig in 1831. Carved from Walrus Ivory, they are believed to have been brought to Lewis by the Vikings in the 12th Century AD.
