Guided trip to Mt. Vodno, St. Panteleimon and Matka Canyon from Skopje
Overview
Embark on a half-day journey from Skopje to explore the Millennium Cross, the Church of Saint Panteleimon, and the Matka Canyon. Take in the panoramic views from atop Vodno Mountain, appreciate the exquisite frescoes in a historic church, and discover North Macedonia's oldest man-made lake.
Your tour begins with a visit to the Millennium Cross, a towering 66-meter monument perched on Vodno Mountain above Skopje. Erected in 2002, this cross stands as one of the tallest globally. It was built as a tribute to 2,000 years of Christianity in Macedonia and honours biblical references to St. Paul's evangelisation efforts in the region.
Next, make your way to the Church of Saint Panteleimon at Gorno Nerezi. Here, you can admire some of the world's most beautiful frescoes that adorn the church.
Lastly, venture to the Matka Canyon, situated west of central Skopje. Spanning approximately 5,000 hectares, Matka is a favoured outdoor destination in Macedonia, boasting several medieval monasteries. Within the canyon lies the Matka Lake, the country's oldest man-made lake.
