Nikko Tosho-guAmong the World Heritage temples and shrines of Nikko, this is the most renowned palace complex, comprising 55 structures—including 34 Important Cultural Properties. The site features stunning lacquer paintings and intricate carvings, making it exceptionally beautiful and worth visiting. The most famous sculpture within the complex is the Sleeping Cat (Nemuri-neko), symbolizing a prayer for world peace. Located on the eastern corridor leading to the inner shrine (Okumiya), it is said to be guarding the nearby tomb of Tokugawa Ieyasu. The world-famous Three Wise Monkeys carving—depicting monkeys covering their eyes, mouth, and ears respectively—is found on the Sacred Stable (Shinkyusha). A major highlight is Yomeimon Gate, regarded as the most magnificent gate of Toshogu Shrine. With its dazzling gold and white design, it is adorned with up to 500 intricate carvings, making it a masterpiece of craftsmanship.
