The Taroko Gorge was formed about 250 million years ago. Four million years ago, the island of Taiwan was formed by the collision of plates. Due to long-term erosion by streams and crustal arching, a vertical canyon was formed. Its special topography is also called Taiwan "Grand Canyon".

Shakadang TrailShakadang Trail in Taroko Naitonal Park has been one of the most popular hiking trails, hikers can enjoy the vibrant turquoise waters of the river, the towering marble cliffs. Stakataka, the name for white rocks, were found all over the riverbed of the Shakadangxi (river), mostly marble and gneiss. The river decorated by the green and white rocks and the stonewall path are the most attractive feature of the trail.

Buluowan is a river terrace on the east side of Taroko Gorge and is separated into upper and lower terraces. It was originally the site of an indigenous village, Buluowan meaning “tracking prey" in Truku language.
