Mabamba Swamp, is a large, protected wetland located on the northern shores of Lake Victoria in Wakiso District, Uganda. It lies west of Entebbe and is one of Uganda’s most important birding sites and eco-tourism destinations.

The island is internationally recognized as a Ramsar Wetland Site due to its rich biodiversity and its vital role in conserving rare and endangered species—especially the Shoebill Stork, a globally threatened bird and the island’s main attraction.

Mabamba is home to over 260 bird species, including migratory and endemic birds such as the Papyrus Gonolek, African Jacana, Blue Swallow, and the Grey Crowned Crane. The area also supports various wildlife like the Sitatunga antelope, monitor lizards, lungfish, and butterflies.

Visitors to Mabamba can enjoy canoe safaris, birdwatching, nature walks, and village tours. The wetland is also an essential resource for local communities, providing fishing, papyrus harvesting, and eco-tourism employment.
