AsakusaAsakusa (浅草) is the center of Tokyo's shitamachi (literally "low city"), one of Tokyo's districts, where an atmosphere of the Tokyo of past decades survives. Asakusa's main attraction is Sensoji, a very popular Buddhist temple, built in the 7th century. The temple is approached via the Nakamise, a shopping street that has been providing temple visitors with a variety of traditional, local snacks and tourist souvenirs for centuries.
- Denboin Street is very well preserved, with many traditional shop buildings dating date back a hundred years or more. This is a great location for finding some unique souvenirs while enjoying the atmosphere of old Edo (the old name for Tokyo). Many of the shops here have been in the same family for generations, and sell hand-crafted goods, foods, and accessories that you can only buy in Asakusa. The street is also quite wide which makes it a more relaxing space after visiting the busy and crowded Nakamise. (pass by)
- Relatively unknown, at least for visitors, Ushijima Shrine managed to miraculously survive the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923 as well as the Tokyo fire bombings of World War Two. The shrine is said to have been established way back in the mid 9th century and built originally to enshrine a single deity, though the current complex now enshrines another two in its Honden building.
