Auschwitz-Birkenau stands as a chilling reminder of the world's most horrific acts of terror, genocide, and atrocities. Constructed by the Nazis in 1940 in the suburbs of Oswiecim, it is estimated that over one million individuals from 28 different nationalities tragically lost their lives here. Recognised for its historical significance, this site has been part of the UNESCO Cultural and Natural World Heritage list since 1979.
