  • Witness the Grand Architecture: The Kokaldosh Madrasah is one of the oldest and largest religious schools in Tashkent, dating back to the 16th century (around 1570). You'll see its traditional Islamic architectural style, featuring a large courtyard, a towering entrance portal (peshtak) reaching about 20 meters high, two-story balconies, and corner towers (guldasta). The façade often displays remnants of its historical decor, including majolica and glazed bricks in traditional colors like turquoise, blue, white, and ochre. Explore the Courtyard and Hujras: You'll likely be able to walk through the inner courtyard, which is surrounded by hujras – the monastic cells where students once lived and studied. These two-story structures form the perimeter of the courtyard.
  • Explore the Iconic Blue Domes: The most recognizable feature of Chorsu Bazaar is its series of large, blue-tiled domes that cover the main market areas. You'll see this impressive architectural landmark from afar and up close as you navigate the market. The bazaar is vast and organized into different sections, each offering a unique array of goods. Fresh Produce: Mountains of colorful fruits, vegetables, and herbs, many of them seasonal and locally grown. Spices and Dried Fruits: Meat and Dairy: Sections with fresh meat, including the local delicacy kazy (horse meat sausage), and a variety of dairy products like katyk (yogurt-like sour milk) and kurt (dried salty cheese balls) Bread (Lepeshka): Stalls piled high with different types of traditional Uzbek flatbread, baked in tandoor ovens. Handicrafts and Souvenirs: Here, you'll find traditional clothing like chapans (quilted robes) and do'ppi (traditional skullcaps), ceramics, jewelry, carpets, and other handmade crafts.
  • Broadway Alley
Stroll along the Pedestrian Street: The main activity is simply walking along the paved alleyway, enjoying the lively atmosphere. It's a popular spot for locals and tourists to take a leisurely stroll. Browse Local Artwork: Broadway Alley is known for its numerous artists displaying and selling their paintings, sketches, and other artwork directly on the street. This provides a great opportunity to see local artistic talent and perhaps purchase a unique souvenir. Enjoy Live Performances: You'll often find street performers, musicians, and sometimes dancers entertaining the crowds. The atmosphere can be quite festive, especially in the evenings. Shop for Souvenirs and Crafts: Alongside the artwork, you'll likely find vendors selling various souvenirs, handicrafts, and local products. It's a good place to pick up mementos of your trip.
  • Amir Temur Square
Admiring the Amir Temur Monument: The centerpiece of the square is a majestic statue of Amir Temur (also known as Tamerlane) seated on horseback. This impressive bronze monument is a focal point and a popular spot for photographs. Observing the Architecture: The square is surrounded by significant and architecturally interesting buildings, including: The State Museum of Temurid History: This museum, with its distinctive blue-tiled dome, is dedicated to the era of Amir Temur and his dynasty. Visitors can explore exhibits showcasing artifacts, manuscripts, and historical information related to this period. The Tashkent Chimes (Kuranty): A notable clock tower and musical chimes located near the square. The Uzbekistan Hotel: A historic hotel with grand architecture facing the square.
  • The Hotel Uzbekistan in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, a prominent example of Soviet-style Brutalist architecture, was built in 1974 as a leading luxury hotel during the Communist era and is located near Amir Temur Square. (pass by)
  • Tashkent Metro
Explore Ornate Stations: The Tashkent Metro is renowned for its uniquely decorated stations, each with its own theme. You'll see stunning architecture, intricate mosaics, grand chandeliers, carved alabaster, and more. Many stations reflect aspects of Uzbek culture, history, and even space exploration. The Kosmonavtlar (Cosmonauts) station is themed around space, featuring blue ceramic walls with portraits of cosmonauts and a ceiling that represents the Milky Way. Example: The Alisher Navoi station showcases Islamic architectural elements with blue and gold layered domes and ceramic tile art depicting scenes from the poet's works. Pakhtakor (Cotton Worker) station has colorful mosaics representing Uzbekistan's cotton industry.
  • Alisher Navoiy Theater
Admire the Stunning Architecture: The theater building itself is a masterpiece, blending European architectural styles with oriental design elements. Designed by Alexey Shchusev (who also designed Lenin's Mausoleum in Moscow), you'll see majestic columns, arched windows, and intricate details both inside and out. Exterior: Look for the tall arches reminiscent of madrasahs and towers resembling the minarets of Bukhara. The building is often beautifully lit at night, making it a photogenic spot. A "singing" fountain often operates in front of the theater. Interior: Each of the six side foyers (Tashkent, Bukhara, Khorezm, Samarkand, Fergana, and Termez halls) showcases the unique architectural styles of these different regions of Uzbekistan, featuring marble floors, hand-carved wooden panels, gold-painted ceilings, and colorful mosaics. The main auditorium is adorned with gilt ornaments.
