Leave Bordeaux for a day and experience the prehistoric caverns in the Dordogne Region from Lascaux, Roufffignac, Font de Gaume to Combarelles.
You'll face the prehistoric evidence of human intelligence and understand that these extremely old paintings, sculptures and etchings are true works of art. They were not produced by scribbles or meaningless stick figures but skilled and creative artisans.
The relics discovered in these caverns in Dordogne are amazingly detailed and realistic. There's shading, 3D realism, clever usage of the natural wall contours and recesses, and other very advanced techniques. Some of these techniques even disappeared for centuries only to be "invented" later in history.
