Overview
This semi-private tour (max 8 participants) blends Bergen’s rich history, charming neighbourhoods, and easy access to nature in a 6km (4-mile) walk—moderate fitness required. Starting at the 1,000-year-old Bryggen, you'll explore narrow alleys and learn about the Hanseatic League and Bergen’s origins. We'll pass St. Mary’s Church, the city’s oldest building, then head into Skuteviken and Sandviken, once a separate fishing village with 300-year-old homes and local life insights. From there, we hike up Sandviksfjellet, following a scenic trail favoured by locals. Along the way, we’ll stop at historical points and enjoy spectacular views as we descend into the city.

Our tour ends at the base of the Floibanen funicular station.
- Our tour begins at the most famous landmark in Bergen - Bryggen! Here you will be introduced to the Hanseatic League and the formation of our city. (pass by)
- As you leave the city and head north, you will stop at the ruins of a 12th century fortification called 'Sverresborg' - part of the Bergenhus Fortress complex. Here you get an amazing view over the city. (pass by)
- Continuing to head north out of the city, we pass Dr. Wiesner's - Bergen's public bathhouse (now a pub!). This, along with the hiking trail you'll take, was essential for the locals health and hygiene at the end of the 19th-beginning of the 20th centuries. (pass by)
- Welcome to Sandviken! Sandviken is one of the best-preserved neighbourhoods in Bergen. Established by fishermen and merchants hundreds of years ago, it was not incorporate into the city of Bergen until the late 19th century. Because it has always been its own village separate from Bergen, Sandviken escaped the city fires and is today one of the best-preserved neighbourhoods in the city. Many of the fishermen's homes are still standing, as well as the warehouses where they worked. You will spend some time exploring this neighbourhood and learning about life here in old times. (pass by)
-
Time to go hiking! From Sandviken, you'll head up the mountainside to the trail "Fjellveien". This is the most popular hiking trail in Bergen for the locals - not many visitors know about it! The trail was established in the late 19th century to improve the health of the locals, and along the trail you'll see manor houses, historic gardens, the first waterworks, and, of course, incredible views out to the city.
