Citadel of QaitbaySultan Abu al-Nasr Sayf al-Din al-Ashraf Qaitbay (c. 1416/1418 – August 7, 1496) was the eighteenth Sultan of the Burji Mamluks. Born Circassian, he was purchased by Sultan Barsbay and later freed by Sultan Jaqmaq. During his reign, he stabilized the Mamluk state and strengthened its northern borders against the Ottomans. Though he led numerous military campaigns, Qaitbay is best remembered for his architectural patronage, leaving his mark on Mecca, Medina, Jerusalem, Damascus, Aleppo, Alexandria, and Cairo.
