Overview
Explore with us the fascinating Appian Way, officially inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2024, recognizing its extraordinary historical, cultural, and engineering meaning.
Considered the world’s oldest surviving road, the Appian Way stretches for more than 300 miles (around 480 km) connecting Rome to Southern Italy, also known as the “Queen of Roads,” it played a crucial role in trade, communication, and military movement.
We will see the main attractions on this legendary road: the enormous tomb of Cecilia Metella, the daughter-in-law of Rome’s richest man, definitely one of the best attractions in Rome, the countryside villa of the emperor Maxentius with its Circus, one of the best-preserved Roman imperial circuses where chariot races were once held and the impressive mausoleum of his son Romolus and finally the Catacombs of San Sebastian, the oldest underground cemetery in Rome, with the first settlement dating back to the late 1st century.
