Long before European settlement, the area was inhabited by the Khoisan people, who used the mountain for shelter, grazing, and spiritual purposes. In 1657, early settlers named the mountain “Paarl,” meaning “Pearl,” after seeing the granite rocks shining like pearls after rain.
