The name "Maungawhau" is Māori, meaning "mountain of the whau tree," referring to the local whau trees that once grew in the area. The cone is part of the Auckland volcanic field, and its crater is a key feature of the site.

The park covers about 75 hectares (around 185 acres) and is set in an area that was originally a volcanic crater, known as the "Pukekawa" crater.
