Overview

This is Barcelona through the eyes of two local food experts. Devour brings you inside the Gothic Quarter’s hidden bars and historic institutions, with every stop on the tour handpicked by Time Out Barcelona’s local editors, the people whose job it is to know where the city eats best. Start in the Gothic Quarter and go beyond the obvious to the tiny bars, family-run institutions. Meet larger-than-life characters that have shaped how Barcelona eats for generations. Taste the classics where locals have been enjoying them for decades, vermouth and cava to Catalan sausage, bravas, and barrel-poured wine.
Follow along the waterfront to Time Out Market Barcelona. Time Out’s local editors have spent years selecting which chefs and restaurants deserve a place here.. It’s two sides of Barcelona in one evening: the places you’d struggle to find on your own and some of the city’s most exciting food, handpicked by the people whose job it is to know where Barcelona eats best.

Meeting point
Please arrive 15 minutes prior to the start of your tour, your guide will be holding a yellow bag and Time Out by Devour meeting point sign. This tour meets at Plaza de Sant Miquel, Ciutat Vella, 08002 Barcelona, Spain. Meet in a square front of a tall metal sculpture (Monumento a los Castellers).

  • Begin somewhere you’d never expect to start a food tour: inside one of the Gothic Quarter’s characterful independent bookshops. Hidden among the books and historic wooden shelves of Llibreria Sant Jordi, La Rebotiga brings together two great Catalan pleasures, food and culture. Raise a glass of cava alongside secallona del pastor and brioche topped with smoked sardine and creamy cheese, for a delicious introduction to a Barcelona where some of the best discoveries are hidden in plain sight.
  • Step into a Barcelona institution dating back to 1935. Originally a neighborhood grocery store before becoming a bodega, La Palma grew into a bohemian meeting place for generations of local artists, painters, poets, and writers. Today, its wine barrels, marble counter, and old-world character preserve the spirit of those earlier days. Settle in for crispy patatas bravas, Manchego cheese and a glass of vermouth as you discover la hora del vermutthe a much loved Catalan ritual that turns a pre-meal drink into an occasion for food, conversation and good company.
  • Bar La Plata
Family-run Bar La Plata opened in 1945 and 80 years later, little has changed. The tiny bar still serves the same four tapas that generations of Barcelonans have come here to eat. Taste two of its classics, Catalan botifarra and the bar’s famous freshly fried fish, alongside house wine traditionally enjoyed from a porrón. Don't know what that is? Great - that's why you're here. Meet the local legend Pepe Gómez. He first walked through La Plata’s doors in 1972 at just 14 years old. More than half a century later, Pepe is a Gothic Quarter institution in his own right and remains at the heart of La Plata.
  • Leave the Gothic Quarter behind and head towards Barcelona’s waterfront. Your final stop and the highlight for many - theTime Out Market Barcelona, spectacularly set above the water at Port Vell. This is a handpicked showcase of Barcelona’s culinary scene. Every chef and restaurant has been personally selected by Time Out Barcelona’s local editors, bringing celebrated names and much loved institutions together under one roof. Settle in overlooking the port for a final feast of seafood paella and creamy Basque-style cheesecake with beer or wine. After eating your way through the hidden bars and old-school institutions of the Gothic Quarter, finish with some of the very best of the Barcelona food scene. Stay on to enjoy the views and ambiance at the stunning bars of the iconic Time Out Market.
