- On 5 July 1628, sixty-four settlers led by Charles Wolverstone arrived in Barbados and chose Bridgetown as the best location for a port, despite its unhealthy swampy land. The town was named after the Indian Bridge, built by the Amerindians. John Swan planned Bridgetown's main streets, with Swan Street named after him, and Broad Street named for its width. Early streets were poorly maintained, so a 1656 law fined property owners 100 pounds of sugar if they failed to keep the area clean. The swamp was later filled and replaced by a canal called the Careenage, where ships were repaired by careening. (pass by)
- The Garrison Historic Area is one of Barbados’ most important heritage sites, with origins in the seventeenth century when British forces used the island as a strategic military base. To reduce the burden of housing soldiers, Barbados requested a permanent garrison, which was approved in 1780. Construction began near Charles Fort and St. Anne’s Castle, and the site expanded from 16 to 64 acres, becoming the largest British garrison in the Caribbean. Many buildings were made with London bricks carried as ship ballast, and about 60 original structures remain. The Garrison Savannah evolved into a military parade ground, the birthplace of cricket in Barbados, and a famous horse racing venue. On November 30, 1966, Barbados gained independence under Premier Errol Walton Barrow at the Garrison. Today, it remains a symbol of the island’s military history, culture, and national heritage. Today, this stunning and unspoilt stretch of coastline is admired for its beautiful white sandy beach, dramatic cliffs, and peaceful atmosphere. Shaded by casuarina and palm trees, Foul Bay offers a quiet escape away from the more developed tourist areas. Beyond its natural beauty, Foul Bay also holds a unique place in Barbados’ scientific history. In August 1962, the HARP (High Altitude Research Project) Gun landed at Foul Bay as part of an ambitious research program developed to study high-altitude ballistic technology. The project represented an important chapter in Barbados’ connection to international scientific exploration and remains a fascinating part of the island’s heritage.

Codrington CollegeCodrington College, established in 1743, is the oldest Anglican theological college in the Western Hemisphere. It was founded through the bequest of Christopher Codrington, who left his estate and funds in 1710 to promote education and religious studies. For over two centuries, the college has trained Anglican clergy from across the Caribbean and continues to support theological education in partnership with the University of the West Indies. Surrounded by one of Barbados’ most scenic landscapes, the college is renowned for its peaceful atmosphere, beautiful lily pond, stately driveway lined with cabbage palm trees, and abundant wildlife, including green herons, ducks, pigeons, and fish. Today, Codrington College remains an important landmark that combines Barbados’ rich history, educational tradition, and natural beauty, attracting both visitors and scholars.

St. John's Parish ChurchWorship at St. John’s Parish Church has taken place on this site since 1645, making it one of Barbados’ oldest Anglican places of worship. The original wooden church was destroyed by fire in 1676 and replaced with a stone structure. After suffering damage from the hurricanes of 1780 and 1831, the present church was built in 1836 and remains an important center of faith and heritage. The churchyard is also the final resting place of Fernando Paleologus, a former church warden and planter who died in 1670. A descendant of the Byzantine imperial family, Paleologus was related to the brother of Emperor Constantine XI, the last emperor of Constantinople. After his family lost the throne to the Turks, he settled in Barbados. Originally buried beneath the choir, his tomb was moved to the churchyard after the 1831 hurricane. Today, St. John’s offers a fascinating connection to Barbados’ religious, architectural, and international history.

SpeightstownWelcome to Speightstown, one of Barbados' oldest and most charming towns. Located on the island's picturesque northwest coast in the parish of St. Peter, Speightstown was established around 1630 and is the second-oldest town in Barbados. It was named after William Speight, an early landowner and member of Barbados' first House of Assembly. During the 17th and 18th centuries, Speightstown was Barbados' busiest seaport and a thriving center of commerce. Merchant ships sailed regularly between Barbados and the English port of Bristol, exporting sugar, molasses, rum, cotton, and other valuable goods. This close trading relationship earned the town the nickname "Little Bristol."
- Holetown holds the distinction of being the first town established in Barbados and marks the beginning of English settlement on the island. In 1625, Englishman Henry Powell arrived in Barbados after being blown off course during a voyage. He returned two years later in 1627 with a group of settlers, who established a settlement in the area and named it Jamestown in honor of King James I of England. Over time, the settlement became known as Holetown, a name inspired by the naturally formed landing area at the mouth of the river, which resembled a “hole” and provided a safe harbor for arriving ships. Today, Holetown blends its rich colonial history with a vibrant atmosphere of beaches, shopping, dining, and culture, making it one of Barbados’ most popular destinations for visitors exploring the island’s heritage.
