We will explore the history and folklore of candombe, as well as the different elements of a traditional comparsa: the drums, the dancers, and the emblematic characters that take over the streets during Uruguay’s carnival parades, known as llamadas.
Candombe has deep roots in Uruguay’s history, closely linked to the African slaves who were forcibly brought across the ocean, far from their homeland. Music and dance became a vital way of preserving identity, memory, and a sense of belonging.
