Catacombe di San CallistoYou will have a privileged guided tour inside the Catacombs of St. Callixtus. The law of ancient Rome forbade, for sanitary reasons, to bury the dead within the city. The consular roads were lined with splendid sepulchres of patricians, who were generally cremated and whose ashes were preserved in urns. The first Christians, however, believing that they had to be ready for the resurrection, were buried without cremation in underground caves dug into the tuff. The dead were placed inside the loculi after being wrapped in two layers of cloth soaked in lye, to avoid the risk of contamination to the living.
