Jami Ul-Alfar MosqueMeet your guide beneath the candy-striped minarets of Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque for 4 hours and 15+ tastings through Colombo. We'll explore the markets, generations-old eateries of Pettah, smoky night streets of Abdul Hameed Street, and finish among the colonial architecture of Fort. Colombo's food tells the story of centuries spent at the crossroads of the Indian Ocean. Arab merchants, South Indian communities and European colonists. Generations of Sri Lankan cooks transformed these influencers into a cuisine entirely their own. Before we get started, our tour reflects the local cuisine and the limitations of traditional eateries mean we unfortunately cannot cater for every dietary restriction. Here's an honest appraisal so nobody is disappointed: ✔ Suitable for pescatarian and no pork diets. ⚠ No seafood diets, lactose intolerance, and mild nut allergies can be accommodated, but some tastings will be unsuitable. ✖️ Unsuitable for vegan, vegetarian, gluten intolerance, and halal diets.
-
PettahBegin with something practically sacred in Sri Lanka: afternoon tea. Silky watalappan brings together coconut, jaggery and warming spices, followed by sesame-and-jaggery thala guli and soft adai sponge cake. Wash the lot down with a cup of warm, milky Ceylon tea. Then step into a humble local institution that's been feeding Colombo since the 1950s. Tear into delicate string hoppers alongside crisp ulundu vadai, punchy red and coconut chutneys and steaming sambar.
-
Our next stop goes back another generation. At a local favourite dating to the 1930s, freshly fried chicken samosas arrive crisp and piping hot, paired with sweet-sharp nelli juice made from Indian gooseberry. Then tackle one of Sri Lanka's most distinctive creations: the egg hopper. Fermented rice-and-coconut batter is cooked into a bowl-shaped pancake with crisp, lacy edges and a soft egg at its centre. From here, plunge into the organised chaos of Pettah Market. Weave between traders and mountains of produce, taste whatever tropical fruits are best that day and crack open a refreshing king coconut.
-
As darkness settles over Colombo, follow the smoke towards Abdul Hameed Street, where charcoal grills are firing up for the evening. We'll travel across the city by tuk tuk before sitting down to the serious business of dinner. Feast on fragrant Sri Lankan chicken biryani and masala-marinated chicken blistered over the grill. Tear apart flaky cheese paratha and load it with intensely savoury maasi sambol, made with dried Maldive fish, chilli and onion. Cool things down with creamy biryani raita before finishing the feast with cold, milky kulfi.
-
Colombo FortFull? We hope so. Finished? Not quite. Hop aboard one final tuk tuk and head for Fort, Colombo's historic colonial quarter. Portuguese, Dutch and British rule have all left their architectural fingerprints here, making it a fitting place to finish an evening exploring the cultures that helped shape the city. We'll conclude with a glass of arrack, Sri Lanka's distinctive spirit traditionally distilled from the fermented sap of coconut flowers. From Ceylon tea and century-old eateries to Pettah Market, charcoal grills and coconut arrack, tonight is Colombo's history told through its food.
