Overview
The Danakil region, accessible from the Afar capital Semera, is a genuine expedition destination. The area requires 4×4 vehicles and navigational skills for tracks to Dallol and Do Dom (for Erta Ale).
- 🚙 Minimum of two 4x4s with experienced staff who are familiar with the local Afar is required.
- 🗓️ The minimum time for a full tour is two nights, including one night at Hamed Ela and one on the rim of Erta Ale.
- 🌄 An extra night at Erta Ale is recommended to see the crater by day, along with another night for Lake Afdera.
- ✈️ Helicopter access is available from Mekele for those preferring air travel.
