Debre Libanos and Portuguese bridge
Overview
Debre Libanos serves as a significant monastic center for Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity, founded by the mystic Saint Teclehaimanot. A small cave near the church is where he is said to have stood on one leg for seven years.
- 🗻 Upon arrival, we will first stop at the Jemma gorge, which features a drop of nearly 1000 meters to the valley below.
- 🐦 Expect to see various bird species around the gorge and forest, including the Banded Barbet and Black-headed Forest Oriole.
- 🌿 Other birds in the area include the White-billed Starling, Red-billed Starling, White-winged Cliff Chat, White-backed Black Tit, White-cheeked Turaco, and Hemprich’s Hornbill.
- 🐒 One of Ethiopia’s endemic mammals, the Gelada or bleeding-heart baboon, can also be observed during this visit.
