StradunStradun, also called Placa, is the Old Town’s main street, running about 300 metres of limestone polished smooth by centuries of footsteps from Pile Gate to Luža Square. Its matching stone facades date from the rebuilding after the great earthquake of 1667, and the side alleys branching off it lead to some of the city’s oldest family-run konobas.

The Franciscan Church and MonasteryJust inside Pile Gate in the Old Town, the 14th-century Franciscan Monastery is known for its quiet Romanesque cloister and a pharmacy that has been operating since 1317, one of the oldest still working in Europe. The friars’ recipes for herbal remedies and creams are still made and sold here today.
