Tepoztlan is one of the best kept secrets close to Mexico City. Located just 90min from the city, it offers majestic views, ancient temples, and a vibrant town of authentic arts and crafts. If you were thinking of going to the temples in Teotihuacan and being inundated in tourists and lines - forget it. Tepoztlan is more unique and less traversed by tourists.

TepoztecoWhile in Tepoztlan, you will have the opportunity to hike up to the famous El Tepozteco. This archaelogical site holds a temple dedicated to the Aztec god of Fertility and Pulque. This is an optional hike for attendees and is approximately 120-150min in length (up and back), and can be quite difficult as the acsent is ~350m over rocks and rough cut stairs. However, the views and the temple are amazing, and it's a beautiful hike.

Mercado Artesanal de TepoztlanIf you choose not to hike, you can spend time exploring the vibrant markets of Tepoztlan. These markets are known for unique art, jewelry, clothing, and other items local to the area. You can also stop into a local pulqueria, allowing you to taste the ancient alcoholic drink that used to be limited to the Aztec priests.
