Overview

The knowledgeable local guide will guide you through the lava flow from the eruption 100 years ago and talk about the lives of the people who still live on Sakurajima and the local specialties that hold a Guinness World Record. At the end of the tour, we will take a bus up to the observatory closest to the crater for a spectacular view. Visitors can experience the symbiosis between nature and humans where people live in an active volcano that is still active today.

Visitors can fully enjoy a dynamic scenery of summit of north peak and scenery of Kagoshima-bay. Buses run every 30 minutes from here to the port.

  • Sakurajima Visitor Center
    After watching a 15-minute video, the guide will give a brief overview of Sakurajima along with the exhibits in the center.
  • Sakurajima Nagisa Foot Bath Park
    At Nagisa Park adjacent to the Visitor Center, visitors can soak in a footbath and enjoy the hot springs blessed by the volcano and the magnificent view.
  • Yunohira Lookout
    Your guide takes you to the highest spot where people can climb up by Sakurajima-island view bus. You will see the North peak and roughly shaped mountain surface right in front of you.
  • This observatory offers a panoramic view of Mt. Sakurajima and Kinko Bay. More than 100 years ago, this was a small island called Karasujima, 500 m offshore from Sakurajima; it was buried by lava from the 1914 Taisho eruption and is now part of Sakurajima. Look at the lava field spread out before you, Visitors can experience the horror of the explosion.
