Overview
Enjoy a 2-hour visit of the museum with an expert local guide. Bargello was established by royal decree on June 22, 1865 as Italy’s first national museum.
The Bargello’s collection brought together some of the most important works of Renaissance sculpture: masterpieces by Donatello, Luca della Robbia, Andrea del Verrocchio, Michelangelo Buonarroti, and Benvenuto Cellini, drawn largely from the Medici-Granducal collection. Subsequently, the museum’s holdings were enriched with superb examples of bronzes, ceramics, waxes, enamels, medals, ivories, tapestries, seals, and textiles, some from the Medici collections and others from suppressed convents or private collectors. In 1888, Louis Carrand, an antiquarian from Lyon, made one of the most important donations, bequeathing to the Bargello his collection of more than 2.500 paintings and works of decorative art.

Museo Nazionale del BargelloLocated in a historic medieval palace in the heart of Florence, the Bargello Museum houses the world’s finest collection of Italian Renaissance sculpture. Once the seat of the city’s chief magistrate and later a prison, the building itself is rich in history and character. Inside, visitors can admire masterpieces by Michelangelo, Donatello, Verrocchio, Cellini, and Giambologna. Highlights include Donatello’s David, Michelangelo’s Bacchus, and exquisite Renaissance bronzes and goldsmith works. The museum also features diverse collections of ceramics, ivories, tapestries, arms, and everyday objects from the Middle Ages and Renaissance. A visit to the Bargello is a journey through centuries of Florentine civic and artistic heritage, where every room tells a story of genius, power, and beauty.
