These majestic tuff formations were once used as shelters by hermit monks, giving the valley its second name: Monks Valley. Their secluded lifestyle carved both space and story into the stone. Ozkonak Underground CityÖzkonak Underground City: Secrets Beneath the Citadel Hidden beneath the hill known as the Citadel, the Özkonak Underground City offers a mysterious glimpse into the past. First opened to visitors in 1964, this fascinating labyrinth was carved by the ancient villagers of Enegüp (modern-day Özkonak), who built their homes around nearly a hundred interconnected tunnels. Originally spanning 8 subterranean levels, only 4 are currently open to the public, with rooms clustered around ingenious ventilation shafts that allowed entire communities to survive underground for extended periods.
