-
The Kwan Tee PagodaThe Kwan Tee or Guan Di Pagoda is the oldest in the Southern Hemisphere and the oldest one in Mauritius. Located at Les Salines, on a Longitude of -20°9'42.12" and Latitude 57°29'31.2", it faces the sea and against the mountains. Its construction and location abides by the principles of spirituality. The pagoda is a very peaceful place with its majestic piece of land and beautiful gardens full of coconut trees in the front of the yard and at the back and a few seasonal fruit trees. The Kwan Tee pagoda is an oasis of peace and tranquility though located in one of the most busiest and stressful place and capital of Mauritius. It is a perfect place for meditation.

Found in the Capital City of Port Louis, the Central Post Office (also known as the General Post Office) dates back since the early Colonial period. The building was erected in 1868, but was inaugurated in December 1870 by Governor Gordon. The Post Office now acts as a Postal Museum showing the history of the Postal Services in Mauritius ranging from old stamps to even some railway history as previously the Postal Services were effected through railway stations acting also as Post Offices in a certain way. We can also notice that this wide space in front of the Colonial building we can see in the above picture has also disappeared, and replaced by the motorway which passes in front of it.

Blue Penny MuseumThe Blue Penny Museum is an art and history museum that is wholly devoted to Mauritius. To begin with, visitors will take a step back into the era of great maritime explorations in the Indian Ocean before moving on to an overview of the three colonial periods in the history of Mauritius. Your journey into the past continues with a foray into the Port Louis of the 18th and 19th centuries. What unfolds next is the tale of the history of postal services, namely with the very first postage stamps to be issued in Mauritius, the world-renowned Post Office stamps. The tour of the museum ends with the beautiful yet tragic story of a mythical couple, Paul and Virginie. Note: Entrance tickets not included in Price

Aapravasi GhatIn the district of Port Louis, lies the 1,640 m2 site where the modern indentured labour diaspora began. In 1834, the British Government selected the island of Mauritius to be the first site for what it called ‘the great experiment’ in the use of ‘free’ labour to replace slaves. Between 1834 and 1920, almost half a million indentured labourers arrived from India at Aapravasi Ghat to work in the sugar plantations of Mauritius, or to be transferred to Reunion Island, Australia, southern and eastern Africa or the Caribbean. The buildings of Aapravasi Ghat are among the earliest explicit manifestations of what was to become a global economic system and one of the greatest migrations in history.
