The synagogue was built in 1796 and is one of the oldest synagogues in Mumbai. It was established by the Bene Israel community, who have a long and storied history in India, dating back to the time of the Second Temple in Jerusalem.

It is the second-oldest Bene Israel synagogue in Mumbai. Built in 1843.It was established due to a split in the management of the earlier synagogue, Shaar Harahamim (“Gate of Mercy”). Some members disagreed and formed a new congregation, which built Shaare Rason (“Gate of Desire” or “Gate of Will”).

The Nariman House, designated as a Chabad house (Hebrew: בית חב"ד) is a five-storey landmark in the Colaba area of South Mumbai. The building was home to a Chabad house, a Hasidic Jewish outreach centre run by Gavriel and Rivka Holtzberg, who had owned the building since around 2006. The centre had an educational center, a synagogue, offered drug prevention services and a hostel. The building was one of the sites of the November 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks and six of its occupants, including Holtzberg and his wife, who was six months pregnant, were killed. Their two-year-old son Moshe survived the attack after being rescued by his Indian nanny, Sandra Samuel.

The Jewish Cemetery in Worli was established in 1927, it is one of the key burial grounds for the local Jewish community. The cemetery is managed by the Jewish Cemeteries Trust, with offices located opposite the Nehru Science Centre.
