The park is dedicated to Cuban writer, revolutionary leader, and national hero José Martí, who played a key role in Cuba’s fight for independence from Spain. The land itself is considered Cuban soil and serves as a symbolic connection between Cuba and the Cuban immigrant community that helped build Ybor City. Today the park features a statue of Martí and historic markers honoring his legacy and the neighborhood’s Cuban heritage.

The Italian Club of Tampa was established by Italian immigrants who came to Ybor City during the cigar manufacturing boom.
