It is the mother church of the Catholic Church and the residence of the pope as bishop of Rome. Built in the fourth century by Constantine, it is the oldest of the papal basilicas. Inside you will find the magnificent Holy Staircase (the staircase that, according to tradition, Jesus ascended to Jerusalem).
