Local Tea Ceremony Experience at Registered Cultural House

Location Hyogo Prefecture, Kansai, Japan
$180
This is an experience gift voucher. The recipient will book the experience after they redeem the gift voucher.

Overview

Unlike many tea ceremony experiences held in commercial venues, this experience takes place inside Toto-an, a historic family home and Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan.

The host grew up connected to this house and its history, offering personal stories that bring the space to life. Guests can use and learn about authentic Sasayama-yaki pottery, including rare pieces created by the host's great-grandfather, a local potter whose work remains part of the family's legacy.

Rather than simply watching a performance, you'll experience tea culture in a living, personal setting where history, family heritage, local craftsmanship, and hospitality come together.

Located in the rural town of Tamba Sasayama, this experience offers a rare opportunity to step inside a real Japanese family home and connect with local culture in a way that few visitors can experience.

Step into Toto-an, a registered cultural property, and experience an authentic tea ceremony in a truly historic setting.
Guided by a local instructor and joined by the owner who grew up in this home, you’ll gain insight into the philosophy, rituals, and cultural meaning behind the practice.

Unlike typical tea ceremony venues, Toto-an is a real historic residence where generations have lived, offering a rare opportunity to experience Japanese culture in an intimate and genuine atmosphere.

Enjoy traditional Japanese sweets from a long-established local confectionery, watch a full demonstration, and try preparing your own bowl of matcha.
This experience is designed not only to introduce the art of tea, but also to create meaningful connections with local people and culture.

During this experience, you will enjoy a tea ceremony while using authentic Sasayama-yaki pottery that was once produced at Toto-an through the family's pottery business. You will also have the chance to meet the owner, whose great-grandfather was a Sasayama-yaki potter, and hear stories about the history of the house, the pottery, and local culture.
