Overview
Experience Mt Wellington's easiest and most accessible adventure ride. This self-guided journey explores up to 33km of the lower slopes of Mt Wellington along the heritage-listed Pipeline Track.
Ride through towering temperate rainforest, past waterfalls, historic aqueducts and stunning mountain scenery, with frequent opportunities to spot wallabies, pademelons, echidnas and even the occasional wedge-tailed eagle.
The trail's gentle gradients and smooth gravel surface make it ideal for beginners, families and recreational riders. A gentle, gradual climb is rewarded with a memorable 20km descent through some beautiful and interesting country.
Follow the route of Hobart's historic water supply pipeline and discover fascinating remnants of early engineering.
Despite being just minutes from the city, the ride feels wonderfully remote and immersed in nature, and you can choose a distance to suit your time, fitness and sense of adventure.

- Mountain bike, riding gloves, helmet, puncture repair kit
- Trail map (printed map & online map)
- Our shuttle bus transports riders from our shop to the start of the trail.
- Advise bringing a drink and a snack.
- Dress according to the weather forecast. The weather on the mountain can change quickly. Recommend bring a small back pack with a spray jacket and extra layer of warm clothing.
Meeting point
Arrive at least 30 minutes before the tour departs for ride briefing and bike fitting.
All-day free parking is on nearby Washington St. and Wentworth St.
Our shop is a 25 minute walk / 6 min taxi from the city/waterfront.
Next door to our shop is Ginger Brown Cafe and a general food store.

Arrive at least 30 minutes before the tour departs for ride briefing and bike fitting.

Next door to our shop is Ginger Brown Cafe and a general food store.
The tour starts with a 15 minute shuttle to the village of Fern Tree; this is where you join the Pipeline Track.
From Fern Tree, it's a very gentle climb up the Pipeline Track, so gentle, it's almost flat. It's 13km to the highest point on the trail, then it's time to turn around and enjoy a 20km descent through endless forest, stop off at the the waterfall, and maybe the Fern Tree Tavern for some refreshment.
The trail pops out on the edge of the city, and the ride concludes with a 1km road ride through historic South Hobart, finishing back at our shop.
