Newcastle Upon Tyne is originally, a Roman city which later featured heavily in wars with Scotland. Its many fine buildings largely a legacy of the Industrial Revolution and its famed coal and shipbuilding industries which brought wealth and invention.

Known around its world for its beer and bridges amongst other things, Newcastle is a city like no other and we will get to see both the most amazing urban train view in Britain as well as a street voted Britains most beautiful (not Edinburgh or Bath)!

See the famous quayside and markets, get a taste of the friendliest city in Britain and voted the second most partying city in the world after Rio (take that London, Las Vegas and Monaco).

See the castle, visit the cathedrals, the markets, experience the culture.

  • See the great medieval city walls, or what's left of them after the Scots breached them at this spot and surged into the city.
  • High Level Bridge
Not the most famous bridge but perhaps the best in Newcastle. With a road and walkways high over the river and an amazing view made all the more incredible as trains pass on the level above! Fantastic old engineering that changed Britain. Also the best place to see.....
  • The Tyne Bridge
See the famous Tyne Bridge, the most famous of the many bridges across the River Tyne and learn of why this design was chosen.
  • Perhaps the finest musical acoustics outside of London. (pass by)

One of the few buildings in Newcastle that survive from the Jacobean Period
  • 2,000 years ago the Roman Bridge stood here. Now is a not quite so old but incredibly impressive swing bridge. A fantastic part of Newcastle heritage built at a time when the city changed and led the world in so many areas.
  • Newcastle Castle
The Romans first built a castle here and of course we are near one end of Hadrians Wall that spans the country to the Tyne which was then an impenetrable defensive barrier.
  • The current Norman castle is pretty much built on and over the old Roman one but we can see some foundations and ruins nearby and find out exactly why they are here.
  • The Black Gate
Built in 1247, this formidable 'new' entrance to the castle has a history as grim as its name suggests!
  • We'll go inside this beautiful old and very distinctive Cathedral.
  • Grey Street
It's been described and voted as the most beautiful Urban street in Britain with fine Georgian buildings and a delicate sloping curve. The very heart of Newcastle.
