Pasochoa Horseback Ride: Chagra Culture and Farm Life Near Quito

Location Quito, Ecuador
$257
This is an experience gift voucher. The recipient will book the experience after they redeem the gift voucher.

Overview

This Pasochoa horseback ride takes you to Sillunchi Farm, an hour south of Quito, to ride with the local chagras. Trails cross open pastures, eucalyptus groves and páramo on the slopes of an extinct volcano, while Cotopaxi, Rumiñahui and the Illinizas line the Avenue of the Volcanoes on clear days.

Back at the farmhouse, a three-course lunch comes straight from the land, followed by the afternoon milking with the farm team. The pace adapts to every group, so families and first-time riders feel at ease. Pair it with one of our Andes mountain tours for a deeper look at highland life.

  • Quito
At 9:00 am, your guide and driver meet you in your hotel lobby. You head south out of the city towards the Pasochoa volcano, passing through the Valle de los Chillos and the green Andean countryside.
  • At 10:00 am, nestled on the slopes of Pasochoa, Sillunchi Farm welcomes you with a warm canelazo, the traditional highland drink of hot cinnamon and naranjilla (with or without a splash of local sugarcane spirit), and a light snack. You’ll meet your horse, get fitted with a helmet and gear, and receive a safety briefing from the farm’s chagras, the Andean cowboys.
  • Pasochoa Forest Reserve
At 11:00 am, ride out across Sillunchi’s lands at the foot of this extinct volcano: open pastures, eucalyptus groves, country trails and páramo landscapes. On clear days, the views stretch along the Avenue of the Volcanoes, with peaks such as Cotopaxi, Rumiñahui and the Illinizas on the horizon. The pace is adapted to your group, so both beginners and experienced riders can enjoy it.
  • At 1:00 pm, back at the Sillunchi farmhouse, you enjoy a home-style three-course lunch prepared with fresh, local ingredients, many from the farm itself, featuring Andean classics such as a hearty soup, a traditional main course, and a homemade dessert.
  • At 3:00 pm, join the farm team for the afternoon “ordeño” and see how cows are milked the traditional way, and give it a try yourself if you like. Then stroll around the grounds, stables, gardens and old buildings of Sillunchi, and learn about rural life and the history of the Andean haciendas.
  • Quito
At 4:00 pm, say goodbye to Sillunchi and Pasochoa, and enjoy the scenic drive back to your hotel in Quito.
