Start in Piran, its pastel houses packed onto a narrow peninsula in the Adriatic. Wander the Venetian lanes to Tartini Square and up to St. George’s Church, whose bell tower is modelled on St. Mark’s in Venice.

Then cross into Italy. Trieste was the Habsburg Empire’s great port, and it shows: grand palaces, historic cafés where James Joyce once lingered, and Piazza dell’Unità d’Italia, Europe’s largest square facing the sea.
