In 1983, it was officially designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its outstanding Mughal architecture and cultural significance. It stands today as an iconic representation of India’s rich history and culture. The iconic Taj Mahal was constructed by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. Construction began in 1632 AD and finished sixteen years later, with the mosque, guest house and main gateway located on the south side being completed first before additional features such as its outer courtyard and cloisters were added between 1648-1653 AD.

This garden is renowned for its perfect alignment with that of the Taj Mahal, and it gained fame as a "moonlit pleasure garden" when Shah Jahan chose this site to admire his mausoleum from afar. These gardens are today called the Mehtab Bagh gardens and this is the favorite spot for the sunset view of the Taj Mahal.
