Great PlazaThe Grand Square of Tikal is the ceremonial and political center of the ancient Mayan city, surrounded by monumental structures such as temples I and II. It is a spacious and green space, essential for understanding the daily life of Tikal. The Grand Plaza is a must-see place and you can climb to the temples around, except the Great Jaguar.
- Tikal Temple III, also known as the Temple of the High Priest, is a funeral-ceremonial temple built in 810 AD under the command of the Mayan king Chi'taam. Lost WorldSome records indicate that this square was organized as an astronomical complex. Which in turn is formed by a pyramid aligned with a platform located in an easterly direction. Part of this building consisted of these temples being used for stargazing. This method was used by the Maya to keep track of the passage of time, according to the astronomical methods they used. You will know the oldest part of Tikal dating back to 800 BC. It has a 32 meter high pyramid that you can climb. Here your guide will tell you about the Mayan calendars, such as the Solar and Lunar.
- One of the main pyramids of the Tikal archaeological site. The temple is located south of the Central Acropolis and is the mortuary pyramid of an as yet unidentified ruler of the other great city of Tikal. It is 57 meters high, making it the second tallest structure in Tikal behind only Temple IV. It has been dated to 600 AD, it is an impressive structure, restored from 1996 to 2023. (pass by)
