  • On the way toward Salona and Klis, guests will pass near the remains of the ancient Roman aqueduct built to supply Diocletian’s Palace with fresh water. The guide will briefly explain how this impressive engineering system brought water from the Jadro River near Salona to the emperor’s palace in Split. Although this is not a scheduled walking stop, it gives guests a useful connection between Diocletian’s Palace, ancient Salona and the wider Roman infrastructure of the Split area. (pass by)
  • Salona archaeological site
Guests will explore the ruins of ancient Salona, once the capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia and one of the most important cities on the eastern Adriatic. The guide will explain how Salona developed from an ancient settlement into a major Roman urban centre, with streets, city walls, gates, public buildings, baths, theatres and residential areas. Special attention will be given to Salona’s early Christian heritage, including cemeteries, basilicas, martyrs and bishops who made the city one of the key religious centres of the region. Depending on time and accessibility, the visit may include Manastirine, Tusculum, the Episcopal Centre, the theatre area and views of the amphitheatre. Guests will also learn how the decline of Salona and the movement of its people toward Diocletian’s Palace shaped the later history of Split. This stop offers a deeper understanding of Roman Dalmatia, early Christianity and the historical roots of the Split area.
  • Klis Fortress
Guests will visit Klis Fortress, one of the most impressive and strategically important fortresses in Dalmatia. Located on a mountain pass between the coast and the inland region, Klis offers spectacular views over Split, Solin, the Adriatic Sea and the surrounding mountains. The guide will explain how this location controlled the route between the coast and the hinterland for centuries, making it important from antiquity through the medieval period and the Ottoman wars. Guests will walk through the fortress walls, gates, courtyards and defensive positions while learning about Croatian rulers, local noble families, soldiers, sieges and the long struggle for control of this key stronghold. The tour also explains the role of Klis in protecting Split and the surrounding area, as well as its later importance in regional history. This stop combines military history, local stories, architecture and some of the best panoramic views near Split.
