Chile seized land in the north with valuable mineral resources (saltpeter and copper), trashed Lima, and pushed Bolivia back from the seacoast into land locked status. Anyone wondering about whether these successes are important and well-remembered should spend some time looking up this quite impressive monument to the victory and its leaders. The monument also serves as a focal point of Sotomayor Square and can be seen from many of the surrounding hills.
