Before you head to this mountain north of Zagreb, visit Kamenita vrata (‘the Stone gate’), on Grič, another name for Gradec. This formed a part of the defensive fortifications of the historic village, and in its passage is the Chapel of Our Lady of the Stone Gate, the patron saint of the city.

St Mark’s Square constitutes the heart of the Upper Town, having formerly served as the main market square of the settlement of Gradec. Dominating the square is the 13th-century Church of St Mark, a three-isled Romanesque church which still retains much of its original shape.
