The Pyramids Of GizaAfter the drive from Port Said, you reach the Giza Plateau and stand at the foot of the Great Pyramid of Khufu, 2.3 million stone blocks raised 4,500 years ago and the last ancient wonder standing. Your Egyptologist walks you to the panoramic viewpoint where all three pyramids align and down to the Great Sphinx. Optional: enter the Great Pyramid ($11 USD per person), camel ride (about $15 USD). Then on toward the older pyramids most cruise visitors never reach.
-
Saqqara PyramidAt Saqqara you stand before the Step Pyramid of Djoser, six stone tiers and roughly 4,700 years old, the world's first large stone building and the prototype for everything at Giza. Built by the architect Imhotep, it marks the moment Egyptians first stacked stone into something monumental. Your guide walks you through the surrounding complex of courtyards and colonnades. With far fewer visitors than Giza, the desert here feels open and quiet.
-
Pyramids of DahshourYou finish at Dahshur with two pyramids of Sneferu, Khufu's father, that show the method being figured out. The Bent Pyramid changes its angle partway up, where builders realized the slope was too steep, and the Red Pyramid beside it is the first true smooth-sided pyramid in history. You can usually descend the narrow passage into the Red Pyramid's chamber at no extra charge. Almost no crowds reach here, so it is just you and the desert before the drive back to Port Said.
