Your experience begins at Litla Kaffistofan, about 20 minutes from Reykjavík. After a safety briefing, you will be provided with insulated overalls, helmet, and gloves before setting off on an ATV into the Hengill geothermal region.
You will ride across the Svínahraun lava field, formed around the year 1000 AD, following gravel tracks through rugged lava covered in moss. The route continues into an active geothermal area with visible steam vents.
You will pass the Hellisheiði geothermal power plant, where underground heat is used to produce electricity and hot water. Your guide will explain how geothermal energy is used in Iceland.
The tour includes a stop in the Hveradalir geothermal area, where you will taste traditional Icelandic rúgbrauð (rye bread) baked in an oven heated by geothermal energy, without electricity. You will also see geothermal activity up close. Please remain on marked paths.
Depending on the option selected, the tour will either remain in the Hengill area (1-hour option) or continue deeper into the landscape (2-hour option), including Jósepsdalur valley and views of Vífilsfell volcano.
