River Cruises Collection: The Best of Bucharest
Overview
Today, you’ll travel to Romania’s capital, Bucharest, to see some of its must-see sights. You’ll start with a drive through the city centre, passing a couple of major plazas on the way. You’ll see Unirii Square, which is home to a giant water fountain, and the 100-year-old Triumph Arch. It’s a smaller version of Paris’ world-famous archway. Next, you’ll wander the Bucharest Village Museum, an open-air park that’s filled with over 200 authentic farmhouses and buildings. Elisabeta Palace, the residence of the Romanian Royal Family, is here, as well. Afterwards, you’ll journey to Revolutionary Square – where Romania’s communist dictator, Nicolae Ceauşescu, was overthrown in 1989 – and visit the old quarter for a guided tour. The latter’s Art Nouveau buildings and ancient churches are the only parts of Bucharest that survived the Second World War. On the way back to port, you’ll stop to take some photos of the heaviest building in the world, the Palace Parliament.
