16 Rakaniwa RockJūroku Rakan Iwa (Sixteen Arhat Rocks) is a striking coastal rock formation located along the Sea of Japan in Sakata City, Yamagata Prefecture. These rocks were carved by a Buddhist monk in the early 19th century as a memorial to sailors who lost their lives at sea. Each figure represents a Rakan (Arhat), a disciple of Buddha, and they are said to watch over the ocean and pray for the safety of those at sea. Set against dramatic waves and rugged cliffs, the site offers a powerful atmosphere and is especially beautiful at sunset, when the rocks are bathed in golden light. It is a quiet, reflective place that combines natural beauty with deep spiritual meaning.
