Taj MahalThe Taj Mahal, also known as the 'Crown of the Palace,' stands as an ivory-white marble mausoleum situated on the right bank of the Yamuna River in the Indian city of Agra. It was commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan (reigned from 1628 to 1658) to serve as the final resting place for his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Additionally, the mausoleum accommodates the tomb of Shah Jahan himself. Encompassing a 17-hectare (42-acre) complex, the site includes a mosque and a guest house, surrounded by formal gardens enclosed on three sides by a crenellated wall.
